The Essential Checklist: What Every Fundraiser Needs To Succeed

Fundraising isn't just about asking for money - it's a complex endeavor that requires strategy, perseverance, and a good understanding of your cause and your audience. Whether you're a seasoned fundraiser or just starting out in your first fundraising gig, this checklist outlines the fundamental elements you'll need to run a successful fundraising campaign.

1. A Clear and Compelling Mission

Your mission is the heart of your fundraising effort. It's what motivates your team, inspires your donors, and drives your campaign forward. Make sure your mission is clear, specific, and compelling. It should highlight the problem you're addressing, the change you're aiming for, and how you plan to achieve it. Be sure to not get bogged down into details, and you should be able to articulate it in plain english without using jargon or industry specific language.

2. Comprehensive Knowledge of Your Donor Base

Understanding your donors is crucial. Know who they are, what motivates them, how they prefer to donate, and how they like to be engaged. This knowledge will help you tailor your messaging, choose the right fundraising strategies, and cultivate long-term relationships. While it is good to know generally what your donors want and know your demographic, this also extends to knowledge of your donors on a more personal and human level. At the individual level, what are their interests? Do they have kids? Where do they like to vacation? Ask these questions and genuinely get to know each of them, as it makes both better for both parties when you get to know your donors without constant solicitation.

3. An Effective Fundraising Strategy

A well-planned fundraising strategy guides your efforts and helps maximize your results. Your strategy should outline your goals, identify the fundraising methods you'll use, determine your key messages, and include a timeline of activities. If you make it up as you go along, you will simply not get the results that you want. If done correctly, there are a lot of moving pieces in fundraising and each action should serve your overall strategy. Remember, you should be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances.

4. Robust Fundraising Tools

The right tools can make a big difference in your fundraising efforts. Invest in a good CRM to manage donor data, consider fundraising software to streamline online donations, and utilize social media and email marketing tools to communicate with your audience. More expensive is not always better in this regard. Go for ease of use over highly sophisticated when it comes to the best fundraising tools. Tools are meant to save you time, not take it from you.

5. Strong Communication Skills

Effective communication is key in fundraising. You need to articulate your mission, tell compelling stories about your impact, and build relationships with donors. This includes written communication (like emails, newsletters, and social media posts), as well as verbal communication (like presentations and face-to-face meetings). Be very honest with yourself about what you need to practice and refine. The more reps you get at this, the more automatic it will become.

6. A Culture of Stewardship

Stewardship is about more than just saying thank you. It's about nurturing relationships with your donors, keeping them informed about how their money is being used, and making them feel valued and involved in your cause. A strong culture of stewardship can help increase donor retention and inspire larger gifts. This extends to everyone in your organization. Stewardship is one of the less complex aspects of fundraising, yet very few charities actually do it correctly (or even at all!)

7. Regular Evaluation and Adaptation

Finally, it's important to continually assess your fundraising performance. Regularly review your strategies, monitor your progress towards your goals, and seek feedback from your donors. Use this information to adapt your approach, improve your methods, and keep your campaign on track. Things will constantly change, and that is both okay and expected! Just roll with it, adapt and do your best with the new information you are always receiving.

Remember, successful fundraising is about more than just raising money. It's about inspiring people to invest in a cause they care about, building relationships that last, and making a real difference in the world. With this checklist, you'll be well-equipped to do just that.
