Over the last 20 years, The St. Rita's Foundation has raised more than $32 million in support. "That's huge," says Jim Reber, St. Rita's CEO of more than 20 years, adding, "It's the critical difference that allows us to take risk, and start new programs." When asked what that means for the community he serves, Jim's response belies his commitment. "Everything we do is about community."
Like many of his peers, Jim keeps an eye on the future. "In 10 years, patients will have relationships with systems, not a hospital. It will be a very different consumer experience, and – as resources tighten up – we will likely have fewer bricks and mortar types projects."
Last winter, in conjunction with Pride Philanthropy's Development Institute, St. Rita's hosted Lima Day on Captiva. As Jim noted, "We have a fair number of snowbirds, so being on Captiva seemed like a natural opportunity." The Foundation hosted 58 guests for a very special reception, who heard an update from their hometown hospital CEO.
Recently, the Medical Center of the Future campaign raised $11 million in support of a $130 million project, enlisting St. Rita's first-ever seven figure gifts. "It was a very exciting project."
Not surprisingly, Jim is committed to devoting energy and attention to the Foundation, and works closely and collaboratively with St. Rita's Foundation Executive Director Kathy Williams to coordinate his time and effort. Jim observes that "Those institutions where the CEO is not as engaged don't seem to do as well. I am able to trust Kathy to use my time efficiently."
St. Rita's ongoing success is in no small part attributable to Jim Reber's commitment to the program.
